Giving Children a Voice in Mediation and Counselling
Workshop Details
This workshop will explore therapeutic techniques for safely interviewing children in relation to their family situation in order to present their needs to the parents, whilst upholding the best interests of the child/ren. Current research on the impact of entrenched conflict on children and developmental implications will also be discussed. Through experiential learning such as case examples, role plays and video presentation participants will apply learning and discuss practice issues. Participants will be supported throughout the learning process with strength based facilitation and coaching.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the importance of truly hearing the voice of the child in a way that empowers the child and presents an opportunity for increasing parental alliance
- Apply neuroscience principles to child consultation and parent feed back in order to increase effectiveness
- Practise child consultation techniques and strategies for single session outcomes
- Develop parental feedback from key child messages
- Undertake role play delivery of parent feedback in a supportive learning environment
- Explore the parameters of confidentiality as it relates to child consultation
- Review developmental needs of children and the impact of separation, divorce and ongoing conflict on children
- Apply key elements of child safety to child inclusive practice
- Learn about the limitations of child inclusive practice and when not to apply this strategy
